Slide of Fortune: The Painful Story and Management Problems of Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin City, Nigeria
Summary
This paper focuses on the management of Bendel Insurance Football Club,Benin City. It examines the reasons for the poor performance of the Club,since 2008, when it was relegated to National League till date (2014). Theproblem has been lack of government attention to the football club, whichled to the dwindling fortunes of the club. The objective of this study was toidentify the factors responsible for the poor performance of the club andmake recommendations that would improve and strengthen the club. Thestudy is a survey research and adopted the use of convenience randomsampling involving the subordinate staff, current players, former (old) playersand coaches. Data collection were from primary and secondary sources.And the methods of data analysis were the simple percentage and chi square. The research found out that the welfare of the players was completelyneglect; that there was no provision for camping facilities; that there waspoor human resources management, absence of business-like managersand, above all, poor funding. In conclusion, this paper recommends thecoordination of the organization’s resources through the process of effectivemanagement in terms of provision of adequate funds, provision andimprovement of camping facilities, recruitment of good players yearlywithout bias to strengthen the team, the complete and regular payment ofthe benefit and entitlement of players.
