The Role of Waste Management in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigerian Cities

The management of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Nigeria poses significant challenges,
particularly in rapidly urbanising cities. This paper examines the critical role of effective waste
management in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within this context. With urbanisation
leading to increased waste generation, the study highlights the urgent need for sustainable practices that
align with SDGs. Through an analysis of current waste management practices, the paper identifies key
players, including the government, the private sector, and informal waste collectors, while addressing the
challenges they face, such as inadequate infrastructure and public awareness. Case studies from cities like
Lagos and Abuja illustrate successful initiatives and the importance of inclusive policies that integrate
informal sectors, public-private partnerships and their role in urban waste management. The paper
advocates for strategic improvements in waste management systems, emphasising recycling and waste-to
energy technologies, integrating technological innovations for more efficient waste processing, and
fostering public awareness campaigns and stakeholders’ collaboration to promote responsible waste
disposal. Ultimately, it calls for a concerted effort to enhance regulatory frameworks and promote
sustainable waste management practices that not only mitigate environmental impacts but also contribute
to public health and the achievement of SDGs in Nigerian cities.
